PR1 Madeira FAQ: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Hike
Transport, tickets, gear and difficulty — nine common questions
Before hiking PR1 it is worth sorting out transport, tickets and what to bring. Here are the answers to the questions I am asked most often.
1. How do I get to PR1?
If you are joining a private tour with a guide, your guide will take care of the transportation. You will be picked up at the agreed meeting point, taken to the trailhead, and provided with transportation after the hike.
If you are hiking independently, plan your transportation carefully depending on which section you choose.
If you are hiking the full PR1 from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, the trail starts and finishes in different places. You will need transportation from the end of the trail, so leaving your own or rental car at Pico do Areeiro does not make practical sense for a full PR1 hike. After finishing the hike, you will not return to where you left your car.
If you are hiking only to Miradouro da Pedra Rija (Stairway to Heaven), it is much simpler. You can walk to Pedra Rija and return along the same trail to Pico do Areeiro, where you can leave by car or other transportation.
2. Do I need to buy a ticket in advance?
Yes. To hike PR1, you need to make a reservation and pay for your ticket in advance. PR1 is one of the most popular hiking trails in Madeira, so it is best to book your ticket ahead of time.
- Stairway to Heaven
- €4.50 to Pedra Rija
- Full PR1
- €10.50 to Pico Ruivo
3. What should I wear for PR1?
Choose comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear for a mountain trail.
For the Pico do Areeiro → Pedra Rija (Stairway to Heaven) section, comfortable sneakers with good grip are suitable.
For the full PR1 to Pico Ruivo, hiking or trekking shoes with good grip and ankle support are recommended.
Dress in layers. Mountain weather can change quickly, so it is useful to have several layers that you can remove, put back on or unzip during the hike.
4. How much water should I bring?
For the full PR1, bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person. The trail includes long climbs and many stairs, so you may need more water than you expect, even if you normally drink very little.
5. Are there toilets along PR1?
There are no toilets along the trail. Make sure you use the toilet before starting the hike.
If you are hiking the full PR1, there is a toilet at Pico Ruivo, where there is also a café. After Pico Ruivo, you continue downhill towards Achada do Teixeira, and it will take some time before you reach the next toilet.
There are also very few places along the trail where you can find privacy, as most of the route is exposed mountain terrain with little or no vegetation.
6. What is the weather like on PR1?
Mountain weather in Madeira can be very different from the weather on the coast and can change quickly. Conditions are particularly changeable from mid-autumn to mid-spring.
Before your hike, check the forecast specifically for Pico do Areeiro, rather than relying only on the forecast for Funchal. If strong winds or heavy rain are forecast, it is better to postpone your hike. For more accurate planning, check the forecast around three days before your hike.
7. Can you hike PR1 at any time of year?
PR1 is not guaranteed to be open at all times. The trail status may temporarily change due to weather conditions, maintenance work or other safety restrictions. For example, access to the trail was periodically restricted during works in 2026.
Before planning your hike, always check the current PR1 trail status on the official IFCN website.
8. How physically demanding is PR1?
It depends on which section you choose.
Suitable for a wider range of hikers
Pico do Areeiro → Pedra Rija
- Many stairs
- Relatively short distance
- Comfortable pace with breaks
Requires very good fitness and experience
Full PR1 to Pico Ruivo
- Long climbs and descents
- Many stairs
- Exposed sections and tunnels
9. Can you hike PR1 without hiking experience?
The full PR1 can be difficult without previous hiking experience. It is one of the most demanding mountain hikes in Madeira and requires good physical fitness and the ability to handle long climbs, descents and many stairs.
The Pico do Areeiro → Miradouro da Pedra Rija (Stairway to Heaven) section can be done without previous hiking experience.
